I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in 1993. When I learned I could utilize the Marathon Health services through Chesapeake Public Schools, I immediately signed up for health coaching. Using Marathon Health saves money and the school gives us wellness leave to utilize the center. It’s a true bonus to our benefits.
The two Nurse Practitioners Suzanne Smith and Angela McFadden are outstanding. I cannot say enough compliments about their knowledge and the treatment they have always provided to me. It’s been above and beyond.
I decided I wanted to start making little changes, and with Suzanne’s help, I set a goal to lose 25 pounds. At each session we would discuss eating and exercise tips. I wanted weight loss to be permanent, so we set realistic goals and changes to my diet.
I lost my soulmate Mike to COVID in December of 2021 and losing him changed everything. I lost my appetite. The staff at Marathon Health were there for me, especially Suzanne and Angela. Suzanne would call to check up on me in between coaching. She was always ensuring that I was eating well and eating enough. She not only helped me physically, but she helped me emotionally.
I started exercising for an hour each day right after school. If it wasn’t too hot or cold, I’d walk 3 miles. If the weather didn’t cooperate, I’d go to the gym. When I finished, I had more energy and any stressors diminished. This hour fills a void in my day that was usually filled with a phone call to Mike.
I actually look forward to exercise now. I have surpassed my weight goal. With the approval of my endocrinologist, I have been able to cut my diabetes medication in half. I feel great. Suzanne and Angela are my medical cheerleaders. — Angela Holliday, Marathon Health Member
