My divorce was difficult and I knew I needed to manage my stress. I wasn’t sleeping well, I was always thinking about the past or the future, and I had a lot of worries and a lot of anger. I couldn’t focus and I always felt exhausted. I wanted to lose the extra weight I had gained while pregnant but the thought of exercising or eating well was overwhelming.
I met Janet Fontana, the RN/health coach at The Wellness Center, through the Mindfulness Series offered through Marathon Health. She helped me set achievable goals and I was able to check in with her, which made me feel accountable and more likely to succeed. She also gave me suggestions on how to fall asleep and stay asleep and helped me release my stress through journaling and listening to podcasts. I began to focus on all the positive things in my life, instead of the negative. Visiting with her gave me fresh ideas to help me overcome any challenge I faced. It has been fun to see the progress I’ve made.
When I first went in for health coaching appointments, I said I didn’t even have 10 minutes to exercise. Now, just a few months later, I walk for 30-90 minutes every day on my commute or during my lunch break. Through Janet, I met with a walking partner. We keep each other accountable and we motivate and support each other. I also started a walking group and track my eating and physical activity online with MyFitnessPal.
I learned to make healthier food choices, sleep better, relax through meditation and monthly massages, and to lean on people for support when I need it. This has helped me strengthen my current friendships, reconnect with old friends, and make new friends with similar interests and goals. Opening up about my hardships and getting support has allowed me to focus on myself, which I realized is something I hadn’t done in a long time. Through the Mindfulness Series, I learned to relax more, to accept things as they are without judgement, be grateful for the positive people and things in my life, and be in the present moment. Now I feel in control of my life and circumstances, and I am truly living.
Today I am healthy and happy! I reached my goal of getting back to the weight I was before I got pregnant. I have a ton of energy, I’m stronger both mentally and physically, and I have more self-confidence, determination, and drive. Making the decision to meet with a health coach was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made and has truly changed my life for the better.
